Founded in 2024, On Fourth and Fifth brings together cellist Mafalda Santos and double bassist Chelsea Strayer, who met as graduate and postgraduate students at Yale University. Their partnership grew from friendship, resilience, and a shared belief that low strings carry a depth of expression that is often overlooked in classical music.
The duo is dedicated to reimagining what low strings can do. Sometimes the music they want to share already exists. Sometimes it must be adapted. Very often, it has yet to be written at all. This pursuit has led them into close partnership with living composers from the United States and Europe, commissioning new works that reflect both the expressive possibilities of their instruments and the issues they care deeply about. Their projects range from premieres exploring contemporary techniques to new pieces shaped by social topics and community conversations.
Education and community engagement are central to their mission. Through school residencies, they introduce young musicians to the creativity, curiosity, and collaborative spirit at the heart of contemporary classical music. Recently, they brought their residency program to schools including Eaton High School and Strickland Middle School, with additional partnerships planned in 2026–2027.
Balancing rigorous performance with an accessible, human approach, On Fourth and Fifth embraces the idea that music can bring joy, connection, and a sense of possibility. Based in Denton, Texas, they perform throughout the United States. The duo is grateful to be fiscally sponsored by the International Foundation for Contemporary Music.
